Returning to Broadway

 Update - January 2022

Although it was decided that the level of Covid-19 infections in January was such that we had to deliver the lecture by Zoom, the committe still intends to continue the return to Broadway in February.  We very much want to build on our return and know that Broadway provides a space large enough for social distancing and with good ventilation. The new Broadway rules set out below will still apply except that guests are now welcomed. A decision will be made nearer the time but we intend to return unless the Covid situation deteriorates significantly or the Government changes the rules.

Options are also being discussed for the course 'Artists' Stories' by the organiser, Chris Castleden.

Returning to Broadway in October 2021

After lengthy discussion with Broadway, the Committee have decided to return to live lectures in Screen 1 from this October, but with a reduced capacity.

We will retain the two sessions; at 10:30am and 12:30pm. With a temporary 122 seating capacity (50%) for each session, this will provide a safe environment for you to enjoy the lectures.

Unfortunately, a pre-booking system is not available to us and, as pre-covid, attendance will be on a first come first served basis. Having compared two-session attendances pre-covid, we anticipate that the reduced capacity (without guests) will be sufficient. We will of course review the process and expect that the capacity will be increased by Broadway in due course. Unfortunately, for technical reasons, Broadway cannot deliver a hybrid lecture into your homes at the same time. Also, for now, we cannot accept guests as we need to prioritise our members during the reduced capacity period. In October, the refurbished Broadway ground floor cafe will be open, but only as table service. The mezzanine bar will be closed for now. Unfortunately, we cannot have other social events at the moment, including a new members meet and greet coffee session. Hopefully this will follow in due course as Broadway permit.

The New Rules

It goes without saying that your safety is at the heart of our planning so when attending, we have agreed the following rules for the October Lecture:

  • Any symptom of covid please do not attend
  • Only members may attend, no guests please
  • You do not need to pre-register for either session - your choice
  • You must first be "Counted In" at the Arts Society banner on the ground floor
  • Only then can the staircase and lift be used for access
  • Registration (previously on the ground floor) will be in the Screen 1 corridor
  • You can be seated from 30 minutes before the start
  • Masks are preferred in the public areas but not mandatory
  • Please use hand gel and observe social distancing when possible

First and second lectures of the season

We hope that all of the members that attended one of the two sessions at Broadway on 13 October or on 10 November will agree with the committee that the arrangements worked as smoothly as could be expected with all the changes that have had to be made.  Several members remarked on how pleased they were to have live lectures once again. The arrangements will be kept under review and any necessary changes made.  We look forward to the time when we can greet new members properly and everyone can return to meeting for coffee between the two sessions.

Third lecture on 8 December 2021 - Grinling Gibbons, Carver to the Crown

The arrangements are the same as for the first two lectures.  There are two sessions at 10.30am and 12.30pm and the auditorium will be open 30 minutes before each session. Broadway opens at 10.00.  Registration desks are still outside the auditorium, and you will still be counted as you come in the front doors.  At present, we are still only able to welcome members and cannot yet have visitors.
