Lecture 1

In a peaceful light: the Skagen painters

For several decades towards the end of the 19th Century a group of painters gathered in a fishing village in the North of Jutland, Denmark, where the sandy land juts into the wild North Sea. They painted fishermen, the sea, the sandy beaches and their own social gatherings which took place in and around the local inn, The Brøndums Hotel.

The Skagen Painters were inspired by the ethereal, luminous light of the evening ‘blue hour’, when the water and sky seem to merge. This talk will explore the paintings of magical blue light and translucent skies that’s earned this group of Danish painters the nickname ‘Nordic Impressionists’.

Lecture 2

Denmark's Vermeer - the silent beauty of Vilhelm Hammershoi

One of the finest painters of his generation, ignoring modern art, Hammershoi chose instead to paint melancholic, muted interiors. Find out why his paintings are the perfect antidote to the noisy, stressful and information-filled society we inhabit today!
